Canadian naval customs and traditions can be traced back to Medieval times when 'Navy' meant "all English shipping and seamen." Although a gunner no longer times his shot by reciting a couplet, many old Navy customs, rich with colour and pageantry remain unchanged today while others have taken on new meaning and significance. This book traces the origins and development of a wide selection of naval practices and ceremonies from hand and ship salutes to "Piping the Side"; from badges and insignia to "Dining in the Wardroom". It provides detailed diagrams of two important ceremonies practised today: The Presentation of Colours and the 'Tattoo, Retreat and Sunset Ceremony'.
